“Ladies and gentlemen, here are the facts as we know them. At approximately four fifty this afternoon, we received a 911 dispatch. The caller said that she had been stabbed several times. The 911 operator asked for more information, and all the caller said was ‘Kat Delaney.’ There was no further communication with the caller. We then dispatched a unit to the residence of one Kathryn Delaney.

“Upon arrival at the Delaney residence, deputies found a deceased woman in the hallway. Kathryn Delaney was at the front door when deputies arrived. We identified the deceased as Brenda Adams, an insurance company representative. She had been stabbed multiple times. There was no sign of sexual assault, other than her blouse being ripped. The premises had been ransacked, indicating that the attacker may have been searching for something.”

“At the time of this homicide, Kathryn Delaney and her late father were the subjects of a criminal investigation.”

“One of our deputies was in the process of transporting Miss Delaney to headquarters, when the masked gunmen ambushed the car and the deputy was fatally shot.” Burton paused and wiped the corner of his eye with his index finger.

“One of the gunmen helped Miss Delaney out of the detective’s car, past Detective Cohen’s body, and into the escape vehicle. We have photographic and videographic evidence that Delaney went willingly and was, in fact, smiling and laughing at the time. She was also carrying a firearm. It is our belief that Kathryn Delaney and the late Sean Delaney are part of a criminal enterprise, along with the gunmen.”

Burton held up a poster with my picture imposed directly below the word “WANTED.”

“We’ve initiated a manhunt for Kathryn Delaney. I’d like everyone here to take one of these posters and pass this information along in your newspapers or broadcasts. Miss Delaney is Caucasian, six feet tall and athletically built, with shoulder length blond hair. Her most notable feature is right here.” Burton used a pen to point to a spot on the photo just above the nape of my neck. “She has a scar in the shape of the letter Z right here on her neck.”
